Heat Pumps provide heating and cooling. For more on heat pump systems see details below.

A 10 seer ducane heat pump recently installed offers air conditioning and heating for the home. Heat pumps are good systems for heating and cooling. Many residential and commercial heat pump system are split systems. A split system can be an air conditioner or a heat pump. It is called a split system because the condenser is split from the air handling unit. The condenser is located outside and the air handler is located at a distance from the condensing unit inside. They are connected by a line set for the refrigeration lines and by control wiring for the control system of the heat pump. The line voltage serving both the condenser and the air handler are usually separate from each other on their own circuits.
A heat pump split system offers both heating and cooling whereas an air conditioner condenser will only provide cooling. An air conditioner condenser in a split system is usually accompanied by either an electric furnace, a gas furnace, or an oil furnace. With a few exceptions, heat pump condensers are usually accompanied by an air handler that has a bask-up heat source. The exception is if the heat pump system is geo-thermal. Geo-thermal typically does not need a back-up heat source. An air to air split system heat pump will require a source of back-up heat. This back-up or secondary heat source can be either electric (most common), gas, or oil (typically referred to a dual fuel heat pump).
