These HVAC compressors are old inoperable compressors. They are semi-hermetic compressors and are easily rebuilt whereas hermetic compressors are not rebuilt. These air conditioning compressors are used mainly in commercial applications for DX cooling. Many of these air conditioning compressors have either failed mechanically or electrically. They are stored because they can be easily rebuilt. If a service company finds a failed compressor in an old HVAC air conditioner they call the compressor company to see if the company has one in stock. The compressor rebuilding company checks their stock and if they do in fact have the compressor in stock they pull it from the rack. The air conditioner compressor is pulled off the rack, disassembled, cleaned, and all new parts are replaced. The air conditioner compressor is reassembled and painted to look like the HVAC compressor is new. The HVAC compressor is delivered to the location where the failed air conditioner compressor was discovered and the new rebuilt air conditioner compressor is installed in the old failed air conditioning compressors place. The old failed air conditioning compressor is placed back on the rack where the new rebuilt compressor used to sit.
DX cooling systems use compressors like these old failed compressors. These air condtioner compressors fail for various reasons and among the reasons for an air conditioning compressor failure is neglect in preventive maintenance practices.
