CO2 is produced naturally by humans. A building where a lot of people are present will result in high CO2 levels. It is necessary to have a method to exhaust these concentrations of CO2. The mechanical code calls for fresh air ventilation of commercial buildings. The amount of ventilation depends on the type of building and the amount of occupancy in the building. The code sets these minimum ventilation requirements for commercial buildings. Every building is not equipped with CO2 control therefore many economizers are set up by a technician when the equipment is first installed. Buildings equipped with CO2 control can open the damper automatically when CO2 levels rise above a set point. This is more expensive to install but it provides a higher level of control and energy savings because it will only ventilate outside air when it is necessary.
